Behind gridlocked windshields, the commuters said unto me…
“Tell us what the kingdom of heaven is like”
To which I replied, “It is like a wealthy, angry and timid man who dreams of calling the police on the young girls who go from door to door selling cookies - for he has clearly posted many signs to forbid these solicitations. So, instead he dreams of hiring an actress to play the child solicitor and then fears the police will turn on him for calling them to tend to such trivial matters. So this wealthy man than hires another actor to play the police officer and is disappointed that he is the only party who knows of the others’ deceit. So finally, he hires a stand in for himself. And this player, crazed by the wealthy man’s requests, runs far away and perhaps enacts the scene of the girl solicitor, the policeman and the wealthy man at a distant town, where the townspeople might watch in fascination. Such is the kingdom of heaven.”
